To kick-off the ‘Events’ series I thought I’d start where my journey began…and has returned to – North Wales. Below you’ll find details of local events (from careers fairs to coding classes), groups to join and ‘tech-ish’ places to visit. If you know of anything else, then get in touch and I’ll make sure that I share. Sharing is caring – love!
PLACES TO VISIT
Based in Wrexham, Techniquest Glyndwr is a science and technology discovery centre and is open all year round. The centre is split into 5 interactive zones plus there is a theatre where you can watch live shows.
There is also an all-day tech club that takes place on the third Saturday of each month – take a look at TechZone below.
Pontio is an arts and innovation centre based in Bangor. On level 3 you will find fabLAB, which offers access to digital manufacturing and prototyping equipment. FabFridays provide anyone over the age of 14 with access to the equipment for free! So, find a slot and start bringing your ideas to life today.
If you’re into Minecraft, Lego or Space then G2G (Good 2 Great) Communities in Rhyl may be worth a sneak peek. Past events have ranged from Lego Robotics and Minecraft workshops to careers days with the UK Space Agency. For upcoming events, head to their website here or follow them on Twitter @g2gcommunities.
CLUBS AND GROUPS
If your local school, college or library has nothing that tickles your fancy, then you might want to give one of the below a whirl.
New to coding? If yes, then head to TechZone at Techniquest Glyndwr and try your hand at solving challenges using LEGO® Mindstorms, Python or Scratch.
For more details head here.
Code Club or CoderDojo
If you do get the coding bug, then have a look to see if there is a local Code Club or CoderDojo group near you.
CoderDojo is aimed at ages 7 to 17 and is a global network of free programming clubs. You’ll build websites, create apps or games, and explore the latest technologies in an informal and super social setting.
For details of your nearest CoderDojo head to their website here.
Code Club runs free coding clubs in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. They are aimed at ages 9 – 13 and you’ll learn Scratch, HTML & CSS, and Python by making games, animations and websites.
Search for your local club here.
North Wales Tech
Join the North Wales Tech Group on meetup. They’re a bunch of like-minded people in North Wales (i.e. with an interest in all things Tech) who organise talks, presentations and social events.
For a list of upcoming events follow Birksy on Twitter or Instagram and search for #eventsinnorthwales.
A couple of events to pop into your diary now are the UCAS higher education exhibitions:
North East Wales – 21st March 2018 at Glyndwr University, Wrexham. Details can be found here.
North West Wales – 15th June 2018 at Bangor University, Bangor. Details can be found here.
Like I said at the top of this post, if I have missed anything then please do let me know and I will share.
One observation having curated this list, is that we (North Wales) have some work to do in order to compete with the rest of the UK! I’ll get my thinking cap on but would love to hear your thoughts. What events and clubs would you like? Let’s make it happen!
